Cupping Therapy also known as (Hijama) is a mode of alternative treatment in which cups are placed across several reflex points across the body, such as the back, abdomen and legs in order to create a localized congestion through negative pressure which is mechanized using a pump. This suction helps to improve the flow of energy in the body and promote healing. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and facilitate cell repair. It may also form connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.
Cupping therapy is used to complement care for a wide range of symptoms and health conditions.
The negative pressure allows blood to be drawn towards the surface of the skin, which in turn stimulates tissues and the internal organs to correspond. This process is considered as 'Dry cupping' and can be used as an isolated method for massage purposes as it has a soothing effect.
Following the above dry cupping step, some skin colour changes occurs where the cups are placed, which is called ecchymosis. This incurs on the surface of the skin which results in the mirroring of an anti-inflammatory response of the immune systems as the production of white blood cells is triggered as part of the healing process. Wet Cupping is a procedure which requires superficial incisions to be made on the cupped zones. The cups are then placed back, and another vacuum is created in order to draw out toxic and stagnant blood from the body. This is also known as "Medicinal bleeding".
Cupping improves the circulation of blood and lymph. It regulates and improves the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Cupping increases the cleansing flow of lymph, while removing congested blood from the muscles. The most obvious benefit of cupping is the heightened relief of pain, a reduction in high blood pressure and the increased mobility of stiff tendons and muscles.
